Microprocessor-Based Metal Detector Detects Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals at High Line Speeds Situation: Our customer needed a design for a metal detector product for use on conveyor lines capable of belt speeds of 1000 feet per minute. Moreover, the detector had to be able to sense both ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Solution: At that time, microprocessors had not been used on metal detectors. Our microprocessor-based design included a detector head with two sets of pickup coils to allow for phase relationship sensing and non-ferrous metal detection. We used a 68000 microprocessor to accommodate the need for high-speed analysis. Results: The customer released a metal detector used in the food industry, and later, by institutions for detecting foreign objects in Halloween candy. |
